- Khara-Minn House adopts the principles of the therapeutic community model to provide treatment and support services primarily for people with severe and enduring mental health problems.
- Through a combination of groupwork, individual work, practical rehabilitation and informal social exchange, support is offered based on the establishment of a healthy network of relationships.
- For the community to be of use in helping its residents to learn and grow, a willingness to communicate thoughts and feelings is required, or an attempt made at learning how to do this in a straightforward manner.
- The work utilises principles such as empowerment, democratic dialogue, social inclusion and establishing a safe environment.
- Residents are actively encouraged and supported in the development of those skills needed to enable them to increase in self-confidence, interpersonal relationships and gain greater control over their own lives.
- The promotion of independence is supported through work, training, education and personal development opportunities.
- When a resident arrives, he/she will be helped to formulate personal and social goals which are then regularly reviewed.
- There is staff on duty 24 hours a day with one staff member sleeping in at night.
