Adult Psychotherapy

Aims:
To provide locality practices with and adult individual and group psychotherapy service that can be offered to their patients in the setting.

To provide an assessment and consultation support service to locality practitioners in relation to the treatment needs of particular patients.

Where a counselling / psychotherapy service already exists Threshold Primary Care Services can provide a supervision / consultation service to therapists.

Therapeutic Interventions
Patients assessed as suitable for psychotherapeutically informed treatment can be offered short, medium, or long term interventions on an individual basis.

On going psychotherapy groups can provide a cost-effective treatment for patients who may be referred for a specified number of sessions.

Who is the treatment for?
Group psychotherapy is considered a treatment of choice ( Rutan & Stone 1993 ) for the majority of patients presenting a primary care level with a range of affective and interpersonal difficulties unless there are specific excluding factors e.g. acute crisis, poor impulse control, active psychotic symptoms. Many of those not suitable for group treatment can work effectively with individual psychotherapy. ( Burton 1998 )
